Thanksgiving & Women’s Leadership: What We’re Thankful For

What We're Thankful For

The Progressive Women’s Leadership team is excited about Thanksgiving. While we all look forward to gathering around the table with family and friends for a much needed holiday, it is important to remember to give thanks. With that in mind, here are the things we’re thankful for in the world of women’s leadership:

Today’s female CEOs, Entrepreneurs and Political Figures
These powerful and influential women inspire us, challenge us and lead the way into a more equitable tomorrow. They are the women leaders who break down the boarders, shatter the glass ceilings and show us all how we can be better leaders.

All Mothers Who Fight to Make a Better and Safer World for Our Daughters
The fight for women’s rights starts with courageous mothers working for a better tomorrow. Without these women, the conversation about female rights in oppressive countries would not take place and Malala Yousafzai may not have been able to become a role model for young girls.

How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran
This irreverent and hilarious book brings a fresh look at modern feminism. Dubbed the “UK Bossypants” by Vanity Fair, this book is a staff favorite.

Sororities & Other Women’s Organizations
Sisterhood lasts a lifetime. These organizations are not only powerful support systems but also networking groups that help empower and honor women throughout their lives, no matter their age, profession or location.

The #womenshould Campaign by UN
Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai started this campaign to shed light on the “widespread prevalence of sexism and discrimination against women.” Do your own internet search starting with “women should” to see the predictive search results that illustrate the need for this campaign.

Lean-In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg
Sheryl Sandberg’s widely successful book has made a big impact on emerging women leaders. It starts discussions on the challenges women face in the workplace into the mainstream. It is also the inspiration for the Lean In organization, which helps support women in world.

HeForShe
HeForShe is a “solidarity movement for gender equality” that engages men in the process. Without this important step, the road to a better world for women would be even more difficult to travel.

All-Girls Schools
All-girls schools provide a quality education dedicated specifically to girls and the way they learn. In doing so, they set girls and young women on the path to becoming tomorrow’s leaders.

UN Women
UN Women inspires us by fighting for women’s equality and security on a global level. From nurturing female political leaders to helping economic equality to ending violence against women – and so much more – there just simply isn’t enough we could thank them for.

We would like to thank all of the great leaders and organizations listed above for their contributions to advancing women’s leadership.

About Lynn Varacalli Cavanaugh

“An important attribute of success is to be yourself. Never hide what makes you, you." -- Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO, PepsiCo

As editor-in-chief of Woman’s Own and American Woman magazines, I have championed the personal and professional development of women for years. I started my career unsure of my own path and abilities, but I always had a natural curiosity and an interest in words and writing. When selected to launch American Woman as editor-in-chief, after a string of editorial jobs, I was thrilled—and terrified at being responsible for a brand new venture. All I could do was my best, based on my instincts and years of experience. American Woman was a success, offering me things I hadn’t achieved before—the confidence to do public speaking and a journalism award (Exceptional Merit Media award from the National Women’s Political Caucus & Radcliffe College). I hope my insights, now as an editor for Progressive Women’s Leadership, will help you on your own journey to career success.
